I completed my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and my M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I also earned by PE in Mechanical Engineering from the State of Virginia. I completed my Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University. My Ph.D. research was on multi-component structural steels that were strengthened by Cu-rich precipitates homogeneously distributed in the ferritic matrix. These steels also contain NbC carbides, which contribute to the total strengthening. These high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels find application in the defense, transportation and infrastructure industries. My thesis focused on the kinetics of the nanoscale Cu-rich precipitates in these copper precipitation-strengthened steels. A significant component of my research was characterizing the steels by atom-probe tomography (APT) employing the Local-Electrode Atom-Probe (LEAP). The steels are also denoted copper steels, Fe-Cu steels, copper precipitation-hardened steels, copper age-hardenable steels and copper-bearing steels.
