I was born in Missouri, but I grew up in Seoul, Korea. I graduated from Yonsei University in 1998 with a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering. Then I came back to states to continue my graduate study here in Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University, under professor David Seidman. I recently passed my Ph.D. final defense.

During my graduate study at Northwestern University, I’ve been working on Ni-based superalloys, from model Ni-Cr-Al alloys to complex commercial superalloy René N6. By investigating the base Ni-Cr-Al ternary alloy, and then add microalloying elements, such as Ta, W, Re, and Ru, we seek to pinpoint the synergistic effects of each additional alloying element on the microstructure of the more complex alloy. The final goal is hopefully to understand the effects of each element in the complex alloy.

I’ve been using three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP) microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study the temporal evolution of nanostructure (coarsening and morphological transition of the precipitates) and chemistry (composition, partitioning ratio, and interfacial segregation) of Ni-based superalloys in a nanoscale environment.
